Join us for a provocative book reading and discussion with Reggie Marra, Yonkers native and author of Healing America’s Narratives.
Both cautionary tale and love letter, Healing America's Narratives provides historical, psychological, cultural, and political context for the inevitability of the mood of America in the 3rd decade of the 21st century. Through brief histories of women, Native Americans, African Americans, the Vietnam War, the post-9/11 wars "on terror" and an overview of current events, the book identifies and explores the nation's collective shadow, what's necessary to recognize, own, and integrate it, and how 330-plus million Americans might begin to heal their individual and the nation's collective narratives. Kirkus Reviews had this to say: “…optimistic in tone, emphasizing hope in the possibility of national healing.…a sophisticated presentation of critical theory, U.S. history and philosophy, the book carefully balances nuance with accessibility and practical application.”
This event is free, but we ask you to RSVP here for planning purposes.
About the Author
Author of four volumes of poetry and four of nonfiction, Reggie Marra is a cofounder, with Kent Frazier, of Fully Human (https://www.fullyhuman.us/), an Integral Coach, and stepdad to Noé. A Yonkers native, he hosted the 3rd-Friday Open Mic at the Hudson Valley Writers Center from 1997 through 2004, and in a previous life was an administrator at Iona College (now University) and a teacher and basketball coach at his alma mater, Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers. In 2018, with the support of folks in 13 U.S. states, Ireland, and Canada, he sent a copy of Killing America, a book of poems, to the president and vice president, and every member of Congress and the Supreme Court. It didn't do any good. But three of them wrote back.
