Poetry/Spoken Word/Music Open Mic

Calling all poets, spoken word artists and musicians!

Join us for our monthly Poetry/Spoken Word Open Mic. Come on by this month - or any second Friday of the month - and share your latest poetry/spoken word/music projects with a supportive audience.

This month’s Open Mic will be hosted by Mayah Pico, a Young Artist in Residence at Bethany Arts Community. Mayah is working on a narrative project combining poetry, collage, and tie-dye. At this open mic, she will be sharing pieces related to this project as well as facilitating a steel-drum meditation. She welcomes others to come collectively unravel through sharing and listening to each other's sounds and stories.

Bring your talent, your works in progress, and your positive energy to our stage. This event is open to teens and adults near and far.

$5 per person, payable at the door. Proceeds are shared among the performers.

About Mayah

Mayah Pico is a poet and visual artist who utilizes the state of artistic creation to express the feelings and intuitions of the mind, body, and soul that can’t be conveyed through traditional language. She communes with the natural world to tell stories that emphasize the inherent strength conjured in states of vulnerability with hopes of inspiring reflection, redemption, and healing.

Mayah’s poetry has been published by The Young Poets Network, The Poetry Society and I, Science magazine. She has been selected as a finalist for the Patricia Eschen Prize for poetry, the winner of a Young Poets Network competition, and was recently invited to read her poetry at the 2023 National Peace Symposium. Her visual art has appeared in England-based magazine spreads and adorned walls and bodies on both sides of the Atlantic.

About Bethany Arts

Bethany Arts Community (BAC) is a space and environment where all forms of art can be learned and expressed. Nurturing the creative process, Bethany welcomes artists, from young to old, and all levels of skill, to explore and create art that the community can engage with.

This event is part of BAC's Young Artist Residency Community Programming. As part of a residency at BAC, each artist builds and facilitates a Community Program. Community Programs are a unique opportunity for both artists-in-residence and the local community to gather, engage, and be in conversation with one another through art. Community Programs are free engagements open to the public and/or in collaboration with a local community partner.
