Jolene, The Disability Awareness Chicken
Jolene was one of six chicks who hatched in the Hudson Valley in the spring of 2021. Her egg was blue, while all the others in the batch were brown or white. Jolene was born with a birth defect known as perosis, which made it impossible for her to fly or run. With daily physical therapy and other tools, Jolene was eventually able to hop around using one leg, and was a sweet and happy bird all her life.
Author Karen Finnegan has written a book about Jolene and her sister Christopher, who together inspire children to appreciate what is special and different in each other.
